A lesson plan with Canva

In this opportunity, I've prepared an interesting lesson plan for secondary school students (precisely in 6th year) with an intermediate language level.

This lesson plan can be used as part of a project with two other subjects (Economics and Politics) and it is supposed to be delivered in two 120-minute lessons.

Lesson plan: Inflation and its consequences

Part 1 (120 minutes)

Students will be asked to work in groups to read a text about inflation.

To start with, the teacher will introduce some key words that are present in the text to scaffold future understanding. Students will be asked to access an online word document (students will get access of the link by scanning a QR code) and look up the following words in the dictionary in order to create a glossary: sustained rise, price, goods, increase, average, households, stable, consumer price index.

Once the vocabulary items have been discussed and checked by the teacher, students will have to answer the following questions:

  • Define inflation.
  • Why do governments aim to control inflation?
  • What happened in Zimbabwe?
  • What is the consumer price index? What does it measure?
  • Calculate the inflation rate if the consumer price index changes from 123.0 to 129.15
  • Calculate how much a basket of goods and services which is currently priced at $1200 would cost if the CPI increased from 125 to 135.
When students finish answering the questions, correction will be done orally. Then, students will have to read another short text about causes and consequences of inflation, and post the main points on Twitter with the hashtag #InflationCausesAndConsequences. The teacher will project the results and the whole class will read the posts, and correct or improve them.

Part 2 (120 minutes)

Students will have to read a newspaper article about inflation rates in Argentina during Mauricio Macri's government. Each group will be assigned a paragraph and they will be asked to make a brief comment about what they have understood.

As a second activity, students will be given a photocopy with some words taken from the article and they will have to complete sentences.

Then, students will answer the following questions:

  • Why was INDEC discredited before Macri’s government?
  • What factors pulled Argentina to recession?
  • What was expected for Argentinian economy?
  • What are emerging markets? Can our economy be considered an emerging market?
I recommend you to correct the questions orally with the whole group and clarify if there is any doubt.

As a final activity, the teacher will paste some QR codes on the classroom's walls with information about inflation rates and dollar price variations in Argentina in the last four years. Students will have to collect and organise the information in order to design an infographic using Canva on their mobile phones. Once they finish, students will have to share their work on Twitter with the hashtag #InflationinArgentina

  1. This is great! I was thinking that maybe in part 2 students can answer the questions in pairs or groups in order to foster collaborative work. You can even give each group one question to answer and they can upload their answer on twitter before you check them orally.
